The Christian life is never a solo journey. Christians need consistent encouragement from each other in order to persevere in faith and live lives characterized by love and obedience to Christ. The Gospel creates a New Community. A central theme which runs throughout the Bible is that God is creating a people who belong to Him. In both the Old Testament and the New Testament, the work of God is the calling of a people. He is not merely saving individuals; He is building a new community in which He is the central focus of His people. The development of a community lies at the heart of God’s covenant promises:
“I will be your God and you will be my people.”
The church must take the call to be a new community with the utmost seriousness (Matthew 5:14; Romans 12:12; 1 Corinthians 12; 1 Corinthians 3:9; 1 Peter 2:5)
To this end the author of Hebrews exhorts us with great urgency:
“Take care brethren, that there not be in any one of you an evil, unbelieving heart that falls away from the living God, but encourage one another day after day...Let us consider how to stimulate one another to love and good deeds, not forsaking our own assembling together” (3:12-13; 10:24-25a).
A community group is a small group where Christian community is primarily developed through our experience of Jesus Christ’s presence and power, and where lives are transformed by the gospel through mutual ministry. At Green Run, our Community Groups seek to facilitate genuine growth in our Christian life, mutual encouragement & care, and service that the Bible calls the local church body to practice with one another. Community Groups are small groups of about 8-12 believers that meet regularly for fellowship, study, accountability, prayer, and service.
