What is genuine spirituality? To answer that question we turn to Paul’s first letter to the Corinthian Church. Though separated by time and distance, modern day America has many similarities with Corinth at the time Paul wrote this letter. Gordon Fee suggests Paul’s Corinth was at once the New York, Los Angeles, and Las Vegas of the ancient world. Paul wrote to the Corinthians because they were confused about what comprises genuine spirituality in the midst of a terribly sinful society. The church was immature and in need of correction. Paul provides the necessary insights in 1 Corinthians which are designed to define genuine spirituality and to prompt believers to gain a mature understanding of how we are to function as God’s Church.
